Betula Nelson trained as a Social Worker at Goldsmiths College, London University after gaining her Psychology Degree from Istanbul University in 1972.
She worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker and as an Approved Social Worker for 16 years in various psychiatric hospitals and local authorities in London. Later she took a lecturer post, progressing to senior lecturer and a Course Leader posts in the Social Work Department of Brunel University. Betula taught at Brunel University for 15 years while pursuing her research in Mental Health and Ethnicity. She returned to part time practice in Community Mental Health and gained the Advanced Mental Health Practitioner status. Betula maintained her teaching and training commitments elsewhere until her retirement in 2008. She continues to enjoy teaching and training to date as a freelance consultant for various bodies.
Betula has always considered herself ’a daughter of Ataturk’ and believes that she owes her independence and freedom of speech to her upbringing in modern and secular Republican Turkey.
She became seriously involved in the work of Ataturk Society UK after her retirement and has commitments as the Foreign Media Coordinator.
